The Warrior and The Writer

The Life of a Teenage Writer

Author Interview with Tricia Mingerink!

Good morning everyone! I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving.

I’m here today to do an author interview with the lovely Tricia Mingerink for the release of her new book Deny which comes out on November 30.

Who inspired you to first start writing?

I’m not really sure. I began drawing picture books when I was two years old, then writing the words to them as soon as I learned to write. I don’t remember a specific inspiration. I just started doing it. But, Laura Ingalls Wilder was my inspiration to be a published author someday.

Which author inspired you to write fantasy?

C. S. Lewis, since The Chronicles of Narnia was the first fantasy series I ever read. After that, I wanted to write fantasy, and I wrote a lot of finished and half-finished fantasy novels, but none of them were Christian fantasy. It wasn’t until I read Jill Williamson’s The Blood of Kings series that I realized there were authors writing Christian fantasy today.

How did you get the idea for the Blades of Acktar?

I didn’t really have a choice. It hit me one day. Bam! Almost all at once. Looking back, I can see some of my research in the actions of the Dutch Resistance in WWII inspired the ideas. But that’s how ideas are. They just won’t leave me alone.

How long did it take you to write Deny?

Ha, ha! Are you talking the first draft or from the first word to publication date? I wrote the first draft in a little over three months, but editing took about six months.

Which character was the most unpredictable character to write?

Brandi is the most unpredictable. I’m not always sure what she’s going to do or what she’s going to say. In Deny, she was actually more predictable than she was in Dare, but her actions had me shaking my head while I was writing the first draft of book 3.

Which scene was the hardest for you to write?

The Infamous Chapter 42. It is such an intense scene that I had to walk away from it a couple of times while writing it.

Which character is most like you?

Leith, sort of. He has the same personality type as me. But there are many ways that he isn’t like me.

And, if you could pick a song to describe one of you main characters, which song would it be?

While writing this series, I’ve been listening to a lot of Chris Tomlin, especially his Burning Lights CD. I think most of the main character’s journeys are captured in the song Whom Shall I Fear (God of Angel Armies). Perhaps the characters aren’t fully at the trust captured in the song, but they’re getting there.

Thank you so much, Ms. Mingerink, for letting me interview you. It was really fun. ^-^

I hoped you enjoyed her answers, and don’t forget to enter the giveaway for signed copies of both Dare and Deny!

  1. ^.^ That’s so neat! These are great questions! C.S.Lewis is a definite inspiration for fantasy. It’s funny where some people get inspiration from, or characters do stuff that is unpredictable.
    Great post! Thanks for sharing!

  2. Great interview! I love it!
