During the second semester of British Lit, Mrs. K assigned a research report. Instead of the dry, boring research reports that literature teachers have the habit of assigning, she allowed us to make a story out of it. Of course we still had to do research and have so many sources and all that jazz, but I was thrilled. I already had story ideas swirling around in my head.
Since I was in love with World War II and Great Britain (due to a little too much of the BBC *nervous chuckle*), I decided to write on the Battle of Britain (think the beginning scene of the movie The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe).
Now, when I’m writing, I love listening to music, and since this was basically historical fiction, I decided that 40’s music would be appropriate to listen to while I write.
I looked up “40’s Music” on YouTube and clicked on one of the playlists. I immediately fell in love with Glenn Miller’s In the Mood (it’s the first song on my playlist below).
I loved the lively, swingin’ sound of this song and listened to it on repeat for days. Then I started branching out and fell in love with other songs like Moonlight Serenade; Sing, Sing, Sing; and American Patrol. Now I have several CD’s of Big Band singers and hits.
I don’t quite know why I love this music so much, but it makes me happy. It transports me back in time to a younger America. Plus, it just makes me wanna dance.
If you’d like to check out some of my favorites (and maybe fall in love with Big Band yourself *evil chuckle*), here’s a playlist I’ve put together on YouTube.
So, what do y’all think of Big Band? Also, what kind of music makes you happy?
