The Warrior and The Writer

The Life of a Teenage Writer

Defy Book Review + Author Interview + Giveaway!

Hello everyone! Today I am honored to have the lovely Tricia Mingerink here on zee blog.

The war for Acktar has begun.

With his betrayal revealed, former Blade Leith Torren flees into the Sheered Rock Hills, pursued by King Respen’s vengeful Blades.

Left behind at Nalgar Castle, Renna Faythe tries to find her purpose, yet that purpose isn’t what she expected.

Brandi Faythe has been torn from her sister, and that isn’t all right. If Leith can’t rescue Renna, Brandi will take matters into her own hands.

War demands sacrifice. Courage falters. Who will find the strength to defy King Respen?

Acktar rests on one hope:

The Leader is ready.

Defy starts off right where Deny ends. This time, instead of opening with Leith’s POV (which usually consists of him getting injured in some way *looks around suspiciously*), we get to get inside of Brandi’s head, which I found very interesting. *smirks a little and chuckles*

This book starts out with each of the characters dealing with the ending of Deny. Brandi is furious at Leith, Renna is courageous (she’s pretty awesome in this book, by the way), and Leith is troubled. Plus, our favorite villainous king is plotting something villainous (go figure). Ya know. Just in case there wasn’t enough stress already.

Our beloved characters grow a whole lot in this book, and I found their developments fascinating to read about. I especially loved watching Renna’s development. (Hurry! Go read the book so we can talk about it!)

Guys, we get to see Eagle Heights! :D I loved it so much. It was really cool seeing how Jamie and Brandi responded to it all. And the Rebel Leader! *freaks out* That part was so cool! :D Just you wait, dearies, just you wait. *smirks*

AND THE ENDING. My goodness. Lemme just say that, like the previous two, Tricia writes non-stop action till the very end. And y’all know what that means. *nods* You won’t be able to put it down. *smiles evilly*

About the Author

Tricia Mingerink is a twenty-something, book-loving, horse-riding country girl. She lives in Michigan with her family and their pack of pets. When she isn’t writing, she can be found pursuing backwoods adventures across the country.

And here is the interview!
1. If you could trade places with one of your characters for a day, who would you choose?
Renna. Because changing places with Leith would seem weird, and going back to being fourteen like Brandi would also be strange.
2. If you could visit Acktar while one of your books is taking place, which book would you choose?
Defy. Preferably at the end after all the scary stuff is over. Especially if I was still Renna for a day. ;)
3. Which scene in Defy was the hardest to write?
Honestly, Leith’s first scene, especially the end part where he is joining the larger group (trying not to give too many spoilers here). That was a scene I added in revision, and I’m not sure even now it fully captures all the mix of tension and awkwardness I wanted. It has to set up all the distrust and misgivings that Leith is faced with during the entire book, and that’s a lot of pressure on a scene to get it right.
You were probably expecting me to say chapter 40, weren’t you? I have this odd thing that most of the time, the chapters where horrible things are happening to my characters are the easiest to write. Not sure what that says about me as a person…
